Popcorn is grown very similar to other types of corn.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with what it takes to raise corn the following is a basic overview.

Applying lime and fertilizer is the first thing to consider.  Lime raises the soil pH and allows the plants to utilize the nutrients in the soil.  The fertilizer gives the corn plants the necessary nutrients to be healthy and productive.

The next step is chisel plowing to both kill early weed populations and begin to establish a fine seedbed.

After chisel plowing the soil is smoothed with a disk to prepare the seed bed for the popcorn.

Once the seed bed is prepared the corn is planted with a corn planter.  Fertilizer is applied at this time through the corn planter to get the plants off to a productive start.

Shortly after planting and before emergence of the plants, a food grade herbicide is applied for weed control.  Nitrogen is also applied with the herbicide.  Nitrogen is a very important nutrient for corn production.

When fall comes a combine harvests the crop.  The corn is then dried, cleaned and packaged.

and weeds are the main things to
manage through the summer months.
